We opened in 2015, taking over the former Hedgecock Building Supply store, and we have enjoyed getting to know the community and seeing all that the area has to offer.
Asheboro is home to a few national and state landmarks, great eats, and fun activities. We’re proud to call this city in the heart of North Carolina home to our newest location and want to share some of our team’s favorite things to do!
A Short History: Asheboro, NC
The city of Asheboro features quite a few natural, economic, and cultural resources for its community. But this city of more than 25,000 started out much smaller, as a village of less than 200 in the 1800s.
Asheboro is the seat of Randolph County and home to the county courthouse, which is how the town drew in more citizens. The city’s population started to grow further once the nation’s railroad system gained traction.
Eventually, Asheboro developed as a textile production center with the opening of the Acme Hosiery Mills in 1909. The city’s manufacturing industry grew further after World War II, and the city’s main attraction opened in 1974: The North Carolina Zoo.
Asheboro also features a few other historic landmarks, including the Sunset Theatre.
The Sunset Theatre is a historic cinema designed and built by the architectural firm of Benton & Benton in 1929. The two-story stucco building features a Spanish Colonial Revival style and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

“Historic Downtown Asheboro has so much to offer for pretty much any kind of mood you’re in for the night...or day!” says Melanie McNeill, Talbert’s Office Manager.
With several antique shops and boutiques for browsing, there’s plenty to see downtown. “And when you need a snack, be sure to stop by the iconic Central Bakery and try one of their many sugary creations,” says Melanie. “The chocolate eclairs are my favorite!”
Melanie also recommends a few restaurants to stop by for dinner or date night.
“I have to spotlight Hamilton’s Steakhouse. It’s a family-owned and operated restaurant on Sunset Avenue that features melt-in-your-mouth steaks and seafood with an ambiance that is second to none,” says Melanie. “Hamilton’s also has a beautiful lounge on the second floor of their building that boasts spectacular views of downtown.” (Be sure to save room for dessert: Melanie recommends the bananas foster.)
For more casual fare, there’s Magnolia 23. “They feature southern soul food that is spot on, and owner Don Simmons will make you feel right at home,” says Melanie. “Their signature fried chicken and southern sides will not disappoint!”
For date night, Chris Teague, a retail sales rep at Talbert, recommends Positano’s. It features traditional Italian cuisine made with fresh ingredients.

Of course, Asheboro is famous for the North Carolina Zoo, which is one of the world's largest natural habitat zoos. The Zoo is home to over 1,000 animals. “I always enjoy going to see all the animals and the new exhibits are awesome. Everyone should come check it out,” recommends Melanie. “It makes a great day trip!”
“There’s also fishing and kayaking at Asheboro City Lake and Lake Reese,” recommends Chris. Or if you want to take the family or friends to the shooting range, he also suggests the CGG Range and Training Complex.
Asheboro is also home to the Historic Pisgah Covered Bridge — it’s one of only two remaining covered bridges in North Carolina. If you’re looking for an Instagram-worthy spot to take the kids, the bridge is perfect for photo sessions, picnics or a pleasant nature walk.
The Bicentennial Park is a great place for family and friends to hang out and enjoy the outdoors. The park is right in the center of Asheboro, offering various activities that everyone can partake in.
From using the picnic tables to have a nice dinner, enjoying a memory walk, and viewing outdoor sculptures, the park provides various ways for everyone to get outside and have fun. In addition, the Bicentennial Park hosts free concerts from June through September featuring different types of music from various bands.
