Our Story

Talbert Building Supply's roots date back to the late 1930s when brothers Edd and J.D. Talbert began harvesting timber for a sawmill. After returning home from World War II, Edd rejoined his brother and continued to grow the Roxboro-based lumber enterprise that would become Talbert & Talbert Lumber Company in 1957. Edd's son Danny grew up working in the business his dad and uncle founded. After graduating college and helping run the lumber company's sawmill and planer mill operations, he opened the retail store in 1983 that was rebranded as Talbert Building Supply, Inc. in 1990.

Our story's next significant milestone occurred in 1993 when Talbert Building Supply joined Lumbermens Merchandising Corporation (LMC). LMC is a leading Forest Products and Building Materials Buying Group owned by independent lumber and building material dealers nationwide. This membership gives us billions of dollars in buying power and access to industry-leading lumber mills and brands, market intelligence, and innovative building solutions. LMC and strong supplier partnerships enable us to source a broad and ever-growing choice of products and services.

We opened our second location in 2004 by purchasing the historic West Durham Lumber Company. Our expansion continued in 2011 with the opening of our Clarksville, VA yard. In 2015, we were fortunate to find an opportunity to expand westward, opening a location in Asheboro on the former Hedgecock Lumber Company property. In 2021, we opened the Roxboro Distribution Center, an extension of our original yard, as a logistics hub for windows, doors, millwork, and decking. Later the same year, we grew our presence in the Triad by acquiring Poindexter Lumber Company in Clemmons. In 2022, we expanded in Virginia by purchasing the Danville location of Plyler Supply Company. Most recently, in our 40th anniversary year, we opened a destination showroom and our 7th location, the Talbert Design Gallery, in Burlington.
